FWAV Resource Format

The following information is not based on any proprietary knowledge or restricted documentation—it was entirely derived from observation, experiment, and public information, thus it may be inaccurate or incomplete.

Analyzed by Greg Noel.

The WAV resource contains a reference to an audio (sound) file.

Many different FWAV resources can be present in a file; they are distinguished by their resource ID. Moreover, FWAV resources can be present at the global and semi-global level.

FWAV Layout
Offset Size Value
0 var Sound Name

The WAV name is a null-terminated string containing the root of the sound filename (that is, the filename with the directory prefix and filetype suffix stripped off). The name is case-insensitive; "Cuckoo_Clock" and "cuckoo_clock" both refer to the same file.

The suffix of a sound file is not fixed; the game will use .wav, .xa, and probably other suffixes indifferently. If more than one file is matches the order of preference is unknown.
