FCNS Resource Format

The following information is not based on any proprietary knowledge or restricted documentation—it was entirely derived from observation, experiment, and public information, thus it may be inaccurate or incomplete.

PRELIMINARY

Analyzed by Greg Noel.

The FCNS resource contains game-wide tuning values. The values range from how many Simoleans to give to a newly-created family, to the default attenuation values for advertisements, to the ratio to increase the bladder when the hunger is decreased.

There are only four FCNS resources in the game. All are found in Global.iff, which in turn is (usually) found in GameData/Global/Global.far.

All numbers in the FCNS resource format are encoded in little-endian order (least significant byte first).

FCNS Resource Layout
Offset Size Value
0 4 zero
4 4 Version
8 4 'FCNS'
12 4 Count
16 var Entry 1
var var . . .

The FCNS resource has a header followed by a variable number of entries. The header is similar to many other resources, consisting of four zero bytes of unknown purpose, a version, the resource type (four characters encoded as a little-endian integer), and a count of how many entries there are.

Two versions have been observed, with values one and two. Version two has only been observed in The Sims Online™ and may only be implemented in that version.
